The Mayans were the first to use jewellery as currency, and while Europe still slumbered in the dark ages, this innovative culture had charted the heavens, evolved the American writing systems, and were masters of maths and calendrics. Without metal tools, beasts of burden or even the wheel they constructed vast cities. In Indian mythology Maya means “an illusion”… so it’s no surprise that we married the words Maya and Gems for our love child - & Mayagems, Maya Gems and Beads from World Travels, was born.

Our gems come from Africa, India, China, Pakistan, Iran, Europe & the middle East. We incorporate our range of stones like turquoise, agate, obsidian, amethyst, lapis, onyx, Peruvian opal, carnelian, quartz and labradorite & jasper, with pearls, silver, amber, coral, gillit, Czech glass, wood & wonderfully rare and ancient beads from Venice, Mali & China. Some beads as old as 2,100 years from the Greco-Roman period, some are from the 10th century – & some are copies of rare & fabulous beads from way back. We make once more wearable art out of anything that catches our creative eye and contemporary pieces that will get people talking.
